2026 Military Pay Raise Overview

The 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) authorized a 4.5% across-the-board pay raise for all active-duty service members, effective January 1, 2026. This is one of the largest military pay raises in years, designed to keep pace with inflation and improve retention.

Pay Raise
4.5%
Effective Jan 1, 2026
E-5 (Sgt) Base Pay
$2,968
At <2 years service
O-3 (Capt) Base Pay
$5,101
At <2 years service
Enlisted BAS
$452.56
Tax-free per month

Pay is determined by two factors: your pay grade (your rank category, e.g. E-5, O-3) and your years of service (YOS). The DoD publishes a new pay table each January; rates increase at each YOS step.

BAH & BAS: Your Tax-Free Allowances

Base pay is only part of your compensation. Most service members also receive BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) — both are tax-free, which significantly increases their effective value.

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH)

BAH is calculated based on three factors: your pay grade, your dependency status (with or without dependents), and your duty station ZIP code. Rates are set to cover median rental costs in each Military Housing Area (MHA) and are updated annually each January.

BAH rates vary dramatically by location. A San Diego-based E-5 with dependents may receive $3,200+/month in BAH, while the same grade in a rural assignment receives the national average of ~$1,194/month. Location matters enormously for total compensation.

Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS)

BAS is a flat monthly rate paid to all service members to help cover food costs. In 2026:

Enlisted BAS
$452.56
Per month, tax-free
Officer BAS
$311.68
Per month, tax-free

Unlike BAH, BAS does not vary by location or dependency status. It is paid to all active-duty members regardless of rank or assignment.

Tax Advantage of Allowances

BAH and BAS are not counted as federal taxable income. For an E-5 in a mid-cost-of-living area with $1,500/month BAH + $452/month BAS = $1,952/month in tax-free allowances. At a 22% marginal tax rate, this is equivalent to earning an additional $2,503/month in taxable wages. This "tax multiplier" effect makes military compensation significantly more valuable than base pay alone suggests.

Special & Incentive Pays in 2026

Beyond base pay and standard allowances, many service members are eligible for additional special and incentive pays based on their career field, assignment, or deployment.

Pay TypeAmountWho Qualifies
Combat Pay (HDIP)$225/monthAssignment to a combat zone or imminent danger area
Aviation Career Incentive PayUp to $1,000/monthAviators and flight crew based on years in aviation service

Understanding Your Total Military Compensation

When comparing military pay to civilian salaries, you need to account for the full picture — not just base pay. Here's what a typical E-5 at 6 years of service in a medium-cost area might look like:

ComponentMonthlyAnnualTax Status
Base Pay (E-5, 6 YOS)$3,426$41,112Taxable
BAH (medium-cost area, w/ deps)$1,800$21,600Tax-free
BAS (Enlisted)$453$5,436Tax-free
TRICARE Health (value)~$500~$6,000Benefit
TSP Match (5% gov't match)$171$2,056Deferred
Total Compensation~$6,350~$76,204

A civilian equivalent would need to earn approximately $85,000–$95,000 in gross wages to replicate this total compensation after accounting for the tax-free status of allowances and the value of military benefits (TRICARE, retirement, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the military pay raise for 2026?
Active-duty military received a 4.5% pay raise effective January 1, 2026, as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This applies to all pay grades from E-1 through O-10.
How is military base pay calculated? +
Military base pay is determined by two factors: your pay grade (rank) and your years of service (YOS). The Department of Defense publishes an official pay table each January. Base pay increases automatically as you accumulate more years of service, with additional steps at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, and 26 years.
What is BAH and how is it calculated? +
BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) is a tax-free monthly allowance that helps service members cover housing costs when they live off base. The amount depends on your pay grade, whether you have dependents, and your duty station ZIP code. BAH rates are updated annually and typically range from $800 to $4,000+ per month depending on location. See our BAH Rates Guide for full details.
Is military pay taxable? +
Military base pay is subject to federal income tax and FICA taxes. However, BAH and BAS are tax-free allowances — not counted as taxable income. Combat zone tax exclusion (CZTE) can make all pay tax-free during qualifying deployments. Many states also exempt military pay from state income tax. Use MilWallet's calculator to see your exact tax liability.
What is BAS and how much is it in 2026? +
BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence) is a flat monthly rate paid to all service members to help cover food costs. In 2026: Enlisted BAS is $452.56/month and Officer BAS is $311.68/month. BAS does not vary by location or dependency status — it's the same for everyone in each category.
How do I use a military pay calculator? +
Enter your pay grade (e.g., E-5), years of service, and duty station ZIP code. A military pay calculator will compute your base pay from the official 2026 pay table, add your BAH rate for your location, add BAS, and show your total compensation. MilWallet's free calculator also factors in federal and state taxes to show your actual take-home pay.
What special pays am I eligible for? +
Military special pays include: Hazardous Duty Incentive Pay (HDIP/Combat Pay at $225/month), Flight Pay (up to $1,000/month), Special Duty Assignment Pay (SDAP), Hardship Duty Pay, Sea Pay, Submarine Pay, Special Forces Pay (CSRB), and more. Eligibility depends on your MOS/AFSC, assignment, and career field. Check your branch's HR office or MyPay for your individual entitlements.
